Shopping Guide
...Card Protection
|

Use one card for online purchases
Consider getting a credit card to use just for online purchases. It
will be easier for you to review your records. If you hold more
than one credit card, we recommend that you use just the one card
for all your online payments and purchases. You have the option of
using your other credit cards if the security of your online card is
in doubt.
Credit Card Account Protection
Carefully and promptly check your credit card statements when they
arrive. If you identify any irregularities, you should immediately
bring these to the attention of the issuer of the credit card by
telephone and in writing. It is also worthwhile filing a report
with the police.
Keeping credit card details on file
If you’ve made a purchase on an online store using your credit card,
you may be asked to choose whether to have the merchant/seller
retain your card details on file for future orders. You might prefer
not to have the credit card number kept on file, but instead to
provide the card number again each time. As long as your card
details are stored somewhere, there is also a chance that it could
be accessed by the wrong person.
We strongly recommend that you purchase from online shop/merchant
that are based in the UK, or EU at least. In some cases you may
feel you are saving money by purchasing from online shops/merchants
from outside the UK, however you will incur unexpected import
taxes. Many goods do not carry international warranty and although
you as a consumer have protection under the UK law, in practice it
might be very difficult to get any money out of a company based
abroad.
Virtual Credit Cards
Some credit card issuers offer “virtual credit cards,” or single-use
card numbers for online transactions. The randomly generated
substitute 16-digit number can be used to buy goods and services
from any online merchant as long as they accept credit cards. Even
though the “virtual credit card” number or the single use credit
card number you give to the merchant is not the same as the one on
your credit card, the charge will be authorized, and it will appear
on your regular credit card bill. With this free service, you never
need to give out your real credit card number online. So, if there
is a breach of security by one merchant, the person who obtains the
number will not be able to use it to charge things to your account.
