Shop at secure
websites
Many online shopping sites use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or SET
(Secure Electronic Transaction) technology to encrypt the credit
card information that you send over the Internet and is designed to
make your connection secure. These online shopping sites usually
inform you they are using this technology. However, some sites claim
they are using this technology when in fact they are not.
The best way to determine whether your credit card and other details
are processed securely is by checking yourself. This can be done by
following two simple steps:
-
Firstly, if you look at the top of your screen where the web
site address is displayed, you should see https://. The "s" that
is displayed after "http" which indicates that web site is
secure. Often, you do not see the "s" until you have clicked
“checkout” or have actually moved to the order page on the
shopping site.
-
Secondly, you can determine if the online shopping site is
secure by looking for a closed padlock displayed at the bottom
of your screen. If that lock is open, you should assume it is
not a secure site.
‘SSL’ and ‘SET’
use encryption
technology to transfer information from your computer to the online
merchant's computer. Encryption technology scrambles the
information you send, such as your credit card number, in order to
prevent computer hackers from obtaining it. The only
people/businesses who can unscramble the code are those with
legitimate access privileges.
Passwords
Always use different passwords?
If you use a password to log on to your network or computer, make
sure you don’t use the same password on online shopping sites. Some
web sites and online shopping sites may require you to create a
password for future orders. You may want to create a special unique
password for particularly sensitive sites, such as your online
banking site.
Choosing your
password?
The best passwords are not your address, birth date, phone number,
or recognisable words. Choose a string of at least six letters, and
numbers. One easy way to create a memorable password is to take the
first letter of each word in an expression or song lyric, and add
some numbers. For example, "3lfchbs" is derived in part from
"3 Lions, Footballs Coming Home -
Baddiel & Skinner."
How to record
your password?
Never write down any password near a computer where someone could
see it. If you really feel you need to write it down somewhere in
case you forget, reverse the order of the characters or transpose
some letters or numbers. You can also write down something to help
you remember the password rather than writing the actual password
itself. That way, someone finding it won’t have discovered your
true password.
Ways of
obtaining your password or other identifying information?
Make sure you are extra cautious when responding to an e-mail, phone
call, fax, or letter from anyone who asks for your password/s,
social security number, birth date, bank account, credit card
number, mother’s maiden name, or other personal information. There
are many individuals who impersonate other individuals, companies,
businesses and organisations in order to get hold of information
they need so that they can carry out fraudulent activities. To
verify that the person contacting you really does work for the web
site or online shop where you have placed your order, call and
request to speak to that person directly. We strongly advise that
you should only give your password and credit card number in a
secure connection on a web site, and not in an ordinary e-mail.
"Theft of identity," in which someone gains access to your bank
account or gets credit cards or loans in your name, is a growing
problem, and you should carefully guard personal information that
may allow a thief to impersonate you.
